Get Outdoors! Come experience something new! One of the newest sports growing in popularity in the area is Sandboarding and sand sledding. Like the winter version, snowboarding, it offers challenges, thrills, lots of fun and exercise. Sand is a softer landing surface so Sandboarding is a great activity for all ages, young and old! Sandboarding is permitted anywhere on the dunefield away from vegetated areas. Do be prepared to hike 3/4 mile to get to the small and medium sized slopes and 1 1/4 miles to the top of the first big dune. High clearance 4WD vehicles may drive on Medano Pass Primitive Road to Castle Creek Picnic Area, there is a 300’ tall slope that is right across from the parking area.

Thinking of using your winter board? Check that thought. Winter snowboards and sleds only slide after recent rains or snow. Sandboards have foot straps for standing and sand sleds have padded seats and handles, both are specially made for sand and feature slick bases that work best for sliding in most conditions. Plan your visit times for early morning or evening during the summer to avoid 150 degree F sand temperatures and be aware of thunderstorms in the area to avoid lightning. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
